The potato chips made right here in Detroit are called Uncle Ray's. Having learned how to cook in the US Navy, Ray Jenkins applied this knowledge to start his own food business in 1965. These delicious chips come in at least a dozen flavors and each one has a different intriguing snippet on the back of the package about Ray's life story and words of encouragement. The factory on Birwood has 75,000 square feet and employs almost 200 people. Uncle Ray's chips are sold in 48 states and Canada. Three cheers for Detroit!

Performance Theatre in Ann Arbor

This top notch live acting group is celebrating its 30th year on this intimate little stage just around the corner from the Arbor Brewery. High school students get an opportunity for summer internships here learning about all aspects of theatre. The current play is 90 minutes of hilarity and is showing through February 19th. Detroit Film Theatre

The gorgeously restored Detroit Film Theatre is attached to and part of the Detroit Institute of Arts on Woodward. The 1200 seat venue was built in 1927, designed by Paul Philippe Cret with C Howard Crane. The result is total elegance. This weekend we were able to see The Mill and the Cross which is quite a fascinating movie within a painting by Pieter Bruegel. One of the DIA's most magnificent works is the Wedding Dance by this Dutch artist. The painting of the movie is Bruegel's The Way to Calvary and blends the crucifixion of Christ with the Spanish inquisition and life in the 16th century. The DFT offers an awesome line-up of foreign and unusual little seen movies. Seriously....we've been coming here forever!

Noisy, boisterous and fun is how we would describe Unton Street on Woodward in Detroit. It was a packed crowd last night that filled this long time favorite eatery just south of The Whitney. The food was pleasing with lobster pizza and french onion soup and one delightful looking dessert tray, but we were too full to attempt. The building is from the early 1900's and a sign above the door read Mad Anthony, a wave to the past when it was named as such.

Detroiter Bar in Bricktown

Detroit's Beaubien Street is home to the neighborhood hangout called the Detroiter Bar. Well known for their hamburgers, it's a small place in Bricktown with a friendly atmosphere. Since every Red Wing game has been sold out this year (they have won 17 in a row at home!), the Detroiter Bar is filled with hockey fans cheering for them on their big-screen TVs. Got tickets? They offer a free shuttle service. April through October, it's a Tigers den with seating outside as well.

They have been proudly dishing out food since 1979 with a location in Clinton Township on Garfield north of 18 Mile while another is on Shelby at Van Dyke at 23 Mile Rd. The have outstanding displays of cheeses, meets , wines, deli offerings and pastries and quite a large collection of goods grown in Michigan. Mangia!

Clarkston's Union Woodshop is just a stone's throw from I-75 at exit 91 and it was filled with happy patrons Monday night. Chosen as the Detroit Freep's best restaurant on Michigan for 2011, it specializes in southern barbecue and comfort food like pizza and mac and cheese. Reinvented two years ago from what used to be the Carkston Café, their laid back atmosphere and superb food offerings have really struck the sweet spot. Even Kid Rock is a fan.

Indian Springs Metropark in White Lake

2400 acres is nothing to sneeze at. Indian Springs (part of the Huron-Clinton Metropark system) in White Lake is huge and offers an 8 mile paved biking loop, a sledding hill and lots of trails for hiking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. What we enjoyed was the Environmental Discovery Center and its pond viewing area in the basement with a dome and windows that show life and activity year round. The beautiful facility was completed 6 years ago and has become a popular venue for weddings.

Bar Louie in Auburn Hills

Sometimes people think we live under a rock. We had never heard of Bar Louie before. And since this place at Great Lakes Crossing was jam packed early in the evening, we decided to explore its offerings. It was a memorable experience! Their 4-7 happy hour Monday through Friday offers half off assorted appetizers as well as $4 wines and $3 draft beers with a wonderful selection of Michigan ones. We had the Winter Pale Ale from Bell's which was superb and the Adobe shrimp on a skewer--fabulous! Come on, for only $5?? It was a whole meal. Do not ask them though if they are a chain. They prefer the word "collection" of which there are seven in Michigan. Live and learn! We like this place a lot.

Detroit People Mover

The Detroit People Mover (DPM) celebrates 25 years in 2012. It runs in a 3 mile elevated loop from the Renaissance Center, passing through Bricktown, Greektown, the Cadillac Center, Broadway, Grand Circus Park, Times Square, Michigan Ave, Fort/Cass, Cobo Center, Joe Louis Arena, the Financial District and the Millender Center. The fare is 75 cents. Many people use this to park in Greektown and then take this transportation to the Joe Louis Arena for Red Wing hockey games or to Cobo for events like the International Auto Show of which today is the last day.

Michigan's largest outlet mall is Great Lakes Crossing off of I-75 in Auburn Hills. 14 years old now, she is an uncontested beauty. It has different areas sectioned off as "wards" and a huge food court and play areas for children. It's all on one floor and a continuous loop that is 1 mile around. With 180 stores, lots of restaurants and an AMC 25 screen movie theatre, it promises fun for everyone.

Quarton Lake Trail in Birmingham

The Quarton Lake Trail in Birmingham is connected to the Linden Park Trail and is another very scenic place to hike. It's path meanders around Quarton Lake and takes you past this beautiful waterfall visible from West Maple Avenue. The huge mill stone memorial is a reminder of the grist mill that stood here from 1835 until 1918, built by Roswell T Merrill. Very cool touch, Birmingham.

Birmingham has a beautiful woodchip path called the Linden Park Trail that follows a meandering river. It's part of the now serene Rouge Green Corridor and on our pleasant hike yesterday we pretty much had it to ourselves. It was quiet, peaceful and a great 2 mile jaunt past some beautiful homes and terrific scenery. Tuesday night, our snowshoe instructor at REI told us he used to hate Michigan winters. Then he developed the attitude that as long as he lived here, perhaps he could try to learn how to enjoy it. Now, he loves the winter and during his snowshoeing treks, he even cooks out there on the trail. Pray for snow!

San Chez Tapas Bistro in Grand Rapids

Frankenmuth's outstanding all-you-can-eat chicken dinners at the Bavarian Inn (and its sister Zehnder's across the street) are famous throughout the state. It began as the Union House Hotel in 1888 and was transformed into the theme of Bavaria in the 1950's. The 50 foot Glockenspiel is fun to watch as its figures represent the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The restaurant and its adjacent lodge sit on the beautiful Cass River and nearby is the well known and picturesque covered bridge.

Tucked away on Grand River in Port Huron is a museum that chronicles the history of ice use in North America. Knowlton's Ice Museum contains over 3000 pieces of memorabilia about this huge industry of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Here you will see how it was harvested, cut, stored and sold and then delivered to your door via horse and buggy. Their collection of antique ice boxes, tools and other related items are perhaps the most extensive in the US. With regular hours only in the summer, in the winter you can call ahead and they will open for groups.

Port Huron Railroad Bridge

The 1931 bascule bridge in downtown Port Huron was used for trains on what was known as the Pere Marquette line, then the C&O and then the CSX. It has long been abandoned in its upright position, but stands as a symbol of the past. Boaters love this landmark that shows them where the mouth of the Black River is located. It's a rare bridge in great condition and should receive national historic designation. It is currently owned by the Port Huron Yacht Club.

Deerlawn lives on in Port Huron Museum

Deerlawn was was a Port Huron home built in 1878 by US Congressman Henry McMorran. The auditorium in the city is named after him. Unfortunately, it was torn down in the 1970's. The furnishings are on display in the Port Huron Museum of Arts and History and we can only imagine what they must have looked like in the beautiful 3-story home.

We attended a function at the Hall of Legends within Ford Field and overlooking the Lions stadium on one side and the downtown area on the other. How awesome is that? The service and the food were outstanding. We found out you can also have functions inside the visiting teams' locker room or in the Atrium as well as other choice little hiding spots. Some of his creative offerings include warmed brie salad, blue cheese pear salad, smoked duck leg cassoulet or white fish with an herbed rémoulade on foccacia bread. The service was very friendly and we enjoyed our meals. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the summertime, we've eaten on the deck and were entertained by the wildlife on the water.

Keweenaw Heritage Center at St Anne's in Calumet

It's large, it's beautiful and it's 111 years old. St Anne's in Calumet was decommissioned by the Catholic Church 40-some years ago due to declining population and attendance. But the building, made of local red sandstone, was preserved and restored by a non-profit group whose members have spent thousands of hours lovingly bringing it back to its glory. They were quick to respond to the lightning strike this past year where they had to repair the roof and the steeple. Even the 100 year old organ works again and wonderful concerts are given throughout the summer. Since 1994, it has housed the Keweenaw Heritage Center which serves as an educational and cultural center supported by donations from Finns, Scots, Swedes, Slovenians, French Canadians, Italians and many others who live in the area or whose heritage goes back to Calumet.

Laurium Manor Inn

Laurium is in the middle of copper country up in Keweenaw Peninsula. Wealthy mine owners back in the early 1900's built some gorgeous homes. The Laurium Manor Inn, which is a lovely B&B, was originally the home of Thomas Hoatson. It has a whopping 13,000 square feet! We peeked at several of the 10 guest rooms which have the old fashioned claw foot tubs. Guests are served breakfast using the original 100 year old table that belonged to Hoatson. When you look at the thistle tiles on the fireplace, you know that Hoatson had to be of Scottish heritage. This awesome B&B has been written up in many different publications.

Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills

All year round, Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills is a favorite for hikers, bikers, sledding, and letting out energies on the playgrounds. Built in 1924, it was a state park until 18 years ago, when the city took over. Our beloved dogs on leashes are permitted. At 200+ acres, it is pretty huge and awesome for a city park. They also have Michigan's only velodrome which we featured here.

Urban Lighthouse in Detroit

Being the first urban state park created in Michigan, millions of people have easy access to it. Created in 2004, the 30 acre Milliken State Park and Harbor parallels the Detroit River giving dynamic views of the water, the GM Renaissance Center, various works of sculpture and this new lighthouse. It is a 63 foot replica of Tawas Point lighthouse built in 1876. This scaled down version marks the entrance to the harbor with spaces for 52 boats come Spring time.

Peter Stroh on the Detroit Riverwalk

There were a lot of people out enjoying Detroit's Riverwalk on New Year's Day as the freighters glided by under cloudy and windy skies. The guy with the binoculars is Peter Stroh, an important business leader in local history and great grandson of the Stroh Brewery founder who began making beer in Detroit in 1850. This philanthropic leader was also a huge conservationist who believed the riverfront should be open to the public and a habitat for wildlife, too. The Riverwalk is a culmination of his awesome vision.

World’s Tallest Red Kettle in Detroit

Although the campaign is officially over now, the World’s Tallest Red Kettle still stands in Detroit at Campus Martius on New Years Day. It really is visible at night when the 25,000 LED lights are lit. Bill Emerson, CEO of Quicken Loans and the builder of this huge 56 ft tall kettle, is the honorary corporate chair of the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. Kudos to the Red Wing hockey players who helped ring the bells. Did you see the Big D that was dropped at midnight at Campus Martius last night? Happy New Year to all our friends and family.

The Village of Franklin's Franklin Grill

The building's history goes back to 1840 in the Village of Franklin when it was used as a blacksmith's shop. We were so pleased to discover this little piece of heaven called the Franklin Grill and Tavern yesterday. Their wine list is delightful with many great selections. The atmosphere is fetching and beckons you to linger over appetizers and drinks. Service was attentive. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the gatherings around the firepit. We will return for some of Chef Tim Citka's specialties like Lake Superior whitefish and the dried cherry lamb chops. However you bring in the new year--may it be merry.

Mt Clemens' Engine house

Inkster's Santa

Inkster has a large display of a Santa with a darker skin color than that presented by Clement Moore in his famous poem "The Night before Christmas". If you dig back in history, you'll find that the origin of St Nicolas is Turkey, which would make sense that his skin pigment is not white. But in our imaginations, Santa can represent whatever ethnic background we want him to match. We love the one in Inkster. It catches our eye.

Pilgrim Church in Detroit

If you've read Mitch Albom's Have a Little Faith or seen the movie, then you know all about Pilgrim Church on Brainard in Detroit. Their ministry, "I Am My Brother's Keeper" was founded by Pastor Henry Covington, who passed away a year ago this month. Donations from around the world poured in to help fix their "Hole in the Roof". They continue to shelter people in their gymnasium at night after they've been provided with a hot meal. The Venetian gothic edifice dates back to 1881 when it was the Trumbell Avenue Presbyterian Church. They still use the 1889 Granville wood tracker organ with its 29 pipes which was constructed in Northville, Michigan. It was very busy here last week as community members were lining up for bags of food. Pilgrim Church genuinely helps people, letting everyone know that we all have different backgrounds but that we all share in the same incredible truth that "God has shown His grace to us through the birth of His son, Jesus." Merry Christmas.

St Mark's Chapel Harsens Island

On Harsens Island, St Mark's Chapel has been overlooking freighters and other ships gliding by in the channel for more than 100 years. They have a beautiful outdoor nativity display. They also observe the custom of Oplatek, those thin rectangular wafers that are shared amongst family members at Christmas time. It begins before the meal and as each piece is broken off and shared, we tell people how important they are to us and ask them to forgive and to forget any misunderstandings or blunders on our part. It's pretty humbling. God's blessings.

Campus Martius Christmas Tree

There's something magical about Detroit's Campus Martius and its beautiful Christmas tree. This huge 60 foot norway spruce is filled with gorgeous lights and jingle bells which epitomize the season. Throw in the adjacent ice skating and you have the makings of a very fine date or family outing. The tree came from a 4H center near Cadillac.

Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries

DRMM or Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries is celebrating 102 years of helping people. They've been all over the paper lately, putting people in a new home for Christmas, providing emergency shelter, food and clothing for the less fortunate as well as creating and supporting a school in Haiti. Right now, they are in need of HUGS (Hygiene items, undergarments, gloves and socks). Donations can be dropped off from 8-5pm at their headquarters on Stimson, close to Wayne State's Campus, off Woodward, south of MLK Blvd. Their mission is to rebuild the inner city, one life at a time. Earlier this year, we featured their restaurant in Highland Park here.

With their lop-sided 8-2 victory over the LA Kings Saturday and squeaking out a victory over the Oilers on Monday, they are set to take on the Canucks tonight as they scrapple with the Blues and the Blackhawks for first place. Gingerbread Houses at MSU's Kellogg Center

Festive gingerbread houses were recently on competitive display at the Kellogg Center of Michigan State University in East Lansing. This gem of a hotel and conference center which currently is celebrating 60 years, is the pride and joy of the university's hotel and restaurant management department. Their State Room restaurant is featuring a wine dinner with Michigan's delicious Black Star wines on January 18th. With its phenomenal services, 160 hotel rooms and adjacent 1000 spot complimentary parking garage, it is extremely popular with the green and white crowd.

Octagon House in Shelby Township

Octagonal homes were quite popular back in the mid 1800's but very few have survived into present day. The Loren Andrus Octagon House in Shelby Township has a large group of supporters who have worked tirelessly to preserve and restore this beautiful home. This 1860 victorian structure has a spiral staircase that goes all the way up to the cupola. It is open at various times throughout the year for teas, open houses and holiday events. A quilters' guild meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 10 to 2 to sew and enjoy the ambiance.

The Tribute Tree in Grosse Pointe Farms

The Tribute Tree is part of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial in Grosse Pointe Farms. Anyone can purchase a light in someone's honor or memory for $10. The honoree is then sent notification and a photo of the tree. They say the gift of light is a gift of love. The War Memorial is a state and national historical site and serves as a center of enrichment to honor our veterans. It used to be the home of the Alger family, built in 1910.

Pride of Detroit at The Henry Ford

In 1927, just a few months after Lindbergh made his historic flight across the Atlantic, two men from Detroit, Ed Schlee and Billy Brock, tried to fly around the world. They had made it from Michigan hopscotching all the way to Tokyo, but a monsoon and pleas from their families and maybe an ounce of sanity made them abort and take a ship to Seattle from Japan, thus completing their journey around the world in 18 days. Their plane, the Pride of Detroit, is displayed at the Henry Ford with details of their heroic efforts.

A beach in landlocked Sterling Heights, you say? This we had to see on Dodge Park Rd at Metro Parkway where Heritage Junior High is currently sitting. Turns out, it's a beach that used to be --in 9000 BC. The University of Michigan spent five years conducting an archaelogical dig near here some 50 years ago of an ancient Paleo Indian settlement. Around 7,000 artifacts consisting mostly of arrowheads and flint chips were unearthed along with the caribou that they hunted. Scientists in the know claim this site rivals the major finds in Mexico, Canada and New Mexico.

Legends of Time Milford in Rochester

There is a Native American art gallery in both Rochester and Milford. We were lucky enough to run into Eagle Flying High a.k.a. Dan DeClark, in his Legends of Time store in Rochester last weekend, as he was crafting his own unique dream catchers. Detroit Memorial Park Cemetery in Warren

African Americans were denied burial in many cemeteries in the Detroit area, or were charged more or were restricted to burials on certain days and at certain inconvenient hours. A group of business owners pooled their resources and bought a large tract of land in the northwest corner of Warren on 13 and Ryan and developed the 85 acre Detroit Memorial Park in the 1920's. Frances Ballard, a Supreme singer, is buried here as well as state senator Charles Diggs, Jr. The Real McCoy is interred here also, that is Elijah McCoy. This son of escaped slaves was a prolific inventor and is credited with developing the drip cup for the lubrication of machinery.

Upton House in Sterling Heights

Michigan experienced another gorgeous weekend weatherwise, as it was sunny but chilly. The Upton house in Sterling Heights was bathed in sunshine and begging for a photo to be taken. Built in 1866 out of brick, it is a great monument to the past. The style, with that darling cupola on top, is Italianate. It stood on 138 acres of farm land owned by William Upton adjacent to the Clinton River. The restoration of this beautiful home took place in the 1980's and it is now used for city public offices as it is next to the police station and library on Utica Road at Dodge Park.

South Pier Lighthouse in South Haven

The distinctive 36 foot tall red stack is a favorite on the west coast of Michigan since 1903 when it was commissioned. This South Pier Light is preserved today by the Historical Association of South Haven. In the wintertime the lighthouse, pier and its elevated walkway are often covered with snow and ice.

Mother Waddles Perpetual Mission in Detroit

Mother Waddles, whose first name was Charleszetta, passed away ten years ago, but her mission work is carried on by her children. She was an activist and a spiritual leader in Detroit who opened a soup kitchen and provided food, clothing, job training, shelter and hope to the disadvantaged. She continued to work 10 and 12 hour days even into her eighties. She was a colorful outspoken woman who said, "I read the Bible. It does not just say go to church. It says do something." She began this mission work at age 36 when she had 10 children of her own. She was an ordained Pentecostal minister. She accumulated countless awards in her lifetime. Today, you can donate your car to the Mother Waddles Charity. She is buried in Detroit's Elmwood Cemetery.

Anton Art Center in Mt Clemens

The Christmas Market at the Anton Art Center offers handmade artifacts by more than 100 artists of which most are from Michigan. This tradition in Mt Clemens is in its 30th year and will last through the 22nd of December. Crocker House of Mt Clemens

Mt Clemens Historical Society members spend three weeks decorating the old Crocker Home for the holidays and it is a special treat to do a walk through of this home built in 1869 for Katherine and George Crocker. Trees are decorated in 1800's style with stringed popcorn and cookies tied with bows. Many helpful docents enjoy giving you key information about each room. We delighted in hearing an old Chapel Organ donated by the children of Agnes Milton Stone. The rooms will be filled with the Ghosts of Christmas Past this Thursday, December 8 from 5-9pm and these friendly spirits have a lot of stories to tell!

St Petka in Troy

St Petka is a gorgeous Serbian Orthodox Church adjacent to Troy Athens High School in the city of Troy. The building whose cornerstone was laid in 2003 immediately attracts attention with its multi-domed structure reaching the heigth of 70 feet. It is a gathering place for the people from the Serbian village of Vratranica, near the Bulgarian border. The founding father of St Petka, Stevan Petrovich, passed away earlier this year. His grandson, Kristijan Petrovich, currently serves as the parish priest.

They give their outstanding shows at the acoustically gorgeous Orchestra Hall directed by Leonard Slatkin. If you tell someone you've been to Alpena, usually the first thing they ask you is, "Have you visited the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center"? This 20,000 square foot museum is the pride and joy of the city. When you walk in, it is eerily lit, like an underwater exploration. It is an awesome adventure of the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and you don't even have to get wet in their high definition theater. You learn about hundreds of boats lying at the bottom Lake Huron in the area called "Shipwreck Alley" and see artifacts from many of the doomed sailing vessels. During winter hours, they are open every day except Sunday 10-5pm. And, the admission is free.

Curiouser and curiouser we become when the art in our museum suddenly appears in our communities. We found this reproduction of François Millet's Reading the Story of Oenome on a shed at Eastern Market. This year the DTE Energy Foundation has helped fund the Inside/Outside project put on by the DIA. There are 80 pieces of art in Detroit and surrounding communities like Holly, Milford, Macomb, Warren, Franklin, Birmingham, Armada, Lake Orion, Oxford and Belleville. The DIA encourages viewers to post photos of the reproductions on their Flickr group and to geocache with the art. Each community that participates gets a free day at the museum. How many have you seen? You have until the end of November enjoy the current crop, but new ones will be installed in April.

Whitcomb Tower in St Joseph

The Whitcomb Tower building is a structure that Saint Joseph is very proud of. It used to be the Hotel Whitcomb, but has been refashioned as a retirement center. Built in 1927, it is located on a high bluff overlooking the beaches of Lake Michigan. The unique distinctive square tower with its copper-covered dome is an icon of the city. It has been used as a retirement home now for 50 years.

A unique chapel lies at the heart of Orchard Lake Schools. Referred to as Shrine Chapel of Our Lady of Orchard Lake, it will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next year. The main doors are rectangles of thick stained glass which, on a sunny day, form beautiful reflections on the floor. The life sized carved statues behind the altar represent Christ and the apostles. Hunters proudly display their catch on the buck pole at Skip's Sports Shop in Grayling in mid November, the beginning of deer hunting season. Skip's has been doing this for over 50 years and Camp Grayling Conservation Club offers prizes for the youngest hunter, the first buck of the day, the largest, etc. Hats off to the hunters and here's to some good venison eating. Trattoria Stella in Traverse City's Village

Up on the hill in Traverse City is a large complex that used to be the psychiatric hospital. Run by the state, it first opened in 1885. The mental ward closed in 1989, but the buildings were saved from being razed and have been beautifully renovated. It is now known as "The Village". There are condos, an art center, grocery stores and the lovely Trattoria Stella, an Italian bistro run by Chef Myles. This wonderful basement eatery serves heavenly food in an historic cozy atmosphere. We loved it.

Rouge Rouge Watershed

The River Rouge Watershed (over 450 square miles) is an extensive network of rivers and tributaries that runs through southeastern Michigan. It used to be massively polluted, but huge clean-up efforts in the 1990's have worked miraculous wonders. It covers a huge urban area and very little of the pollution is industrial. For 25 years the Friends of the River Rouge (or FOTR) have been promoting its restoration and educating the public to step up and protect. The fifth annual kayak tour was in September when 45 watercraft were plying the Rouge and promoting a healthy river system.

Ray's Ice Cream in Royal Oak has been dishing out their homemade frozen scoops since 1958. The family run business on Coolidge just north of Normandy is a beacon for ice cream lovers. They've even preserved the music from that era. We give it 5 stars because they even stay open seven days a week until 9pm all year long!

Graced with another sunshiny, gorgeous Saturday in November, we hit the Clinton River Trail in Oakland County. This 16 mile beautifully maintained path is for joggers, bikers, hikers and anybody who wants to use their own human power to propel themselves out in nature. We picked up the trail in downtown Rochester, but it also runs through Sylvan Lake, Pontiac and Auburn Hills. It connects to the Paint Creek Trail and the Macomb Orchard Trail which together provide one of the most well connected networks in the country.

We never cease to be amazed at the variety and beauty of what can be found in Michigan. Overlooking beautiful Orchard Lake is a unique structure called the Marian Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes which is visited by an estimated 25,000 people a year. It is on the campus of St Mary's Preparatory School and the Orchard Lake Campus of Madonna University. In 1941 Josephine Rzeppa, a Detroit business woman, donated $5000 which was used to build the shrine in just 31 days using tufa rock from Blue Hole, Ohio.

Many wineries are thriving in the Leelanau Peninsula with the waters of Lake Michigan and Grand Traverse Bay tempering the climate. They prevent early blossoming and hold off the first frost and then the heavy snows protect the vines all winter long. The Ciccone Vineyard in Suttons Bay is a fun place to tour. Even in November, they are open Thursday through Sunday for tastings and tours. Tony Ciccone, the owner, is the father of the singer, Madonna, hence some of their wines have been so labeled. They have several gold and silver medal winners.

Sunset in Caseville

Normally, they call the eastern coast of Michigan the sunrise side of the state, but there are sections, like in Caseville at the tip of the thumb, where you can see the most beautiful sunsets. The population is less than 1000, but it swells big time int he summer when hordes of tourists pack the city, especially for the cheeseburger festival in mid-August. It is also the Perch Capital of Michigan.

Edmund Fitzgerald at Whitefish Point

On November 10, 1975 the Great Lakes freighter Edmund Fitzgerald went down in Lake Superior, shocking us all. The "Big Fitz" sunk during a huge storm on the lake that generated 35 foot waves. Thirty-six years later, this poignant make-shift memorable in the sand up at Whitefish Point helps us remember the event, the 29 lives that were lost and serves as a reminder of how fragile life is. When only five libraries nationwide are chosen as recipients of the National Medal for Museum and Library Service a year, we have an insatiable curiosity to go check them out. West Bloomfield's was selected in 2010 for this award given out at the White House by Michele Obama. What an honor! We found the library to be gorgeous and very inviting. The huge animals hanging over the children's area invite the mucnkins to come closer. Reading is a critical skill. Communities who support, promote and prioritize their libraries realize this. Waterford's Dodge #4 State Park

When weather like this hits in November, you have to forego football games and get out to take it all in. Dodge #4 State Park in Waterford was sublime yesterday. We saw hikers and dogs, picnickers, boaters, bikers, fishermen and lots of photographers. In 1922 the Dodge Brothers Corporation donated 139 acres for use as a park. With its mile of sidewalks and paths on Cass Lake, it's a beauty.

The Donkey at the DIA

There are so many incredible treasures in our Detroit Institute of Arts that habitual visits are a necessity to be always discovering new ones. We bet many visitors have passed by this bronze donkey on the second floor without giving it much of a thought, but he is the one piece of art that everyone is invited to touch. And it is probably precisely this reason that we love him so much. Look how worn he is--kind of like the velveteen rabbit whose fur was rubbed off from loving it too much. Created by German artist, Renee Sintenis, in 1927, it is actually a good example of how masterpieces slowly erode under human hands.

Los Galanes, right on Bagley by the I-75 service drive, is known for its fiestas and fun. Mexicans celebrate the Day of the Dead on Nov 1-2 and we love to join in the festivities, too. There's a store in MexicanTown called Xochi's that sells Day of the Dead skeletons and even has an authentic ofrenda --or altar--set up in their back room complete with the traditional marigold flowers and candles. These particular days really do celebrate life and honor those loved ones in our families who have passed on.

If we were to nominate a home for best Halloween decorations, it would have to be the one in Royal Oak on Hampton. It is animated and lit with corpses popping out of caskets, a gigantic spider dropping from a tree, a frightful electrocution, a huge human-like bat creature zooming down from above, a fenced in graveyard, a castle and a guillotine. Not for small children or the faint of heart, but all in fun, it's totally ghoulish.

The streets were swarming with the little costumed tykes yesterday for downtown Clawson's annual Trick-or-Treasure. From noon to 3pm, each business that participated hung out their decorated scarecrow. It was a precious site with crossing guards strategically placed to halt traffic on 14 Mile Road for the goblins and princesses, pirates and ladybugs.

The Uniroyal Tire on I-94 is the iconic symbol of Detroit as we zoom by on our way to or from the airport. It has been there in Allen Park since 1965. Prior to its installation on the expressway, the 8-story structure was used as a ferris wheel for the New York State Fair. If you look closely, you'll see a giant nail stuck in the top, representing the self-sealing leaks of Uniroyal.

Rochester Train Depot

We had the wonderful privilege of taking downtown Rochester's walking tour, led by Rod Wilson. He carries a binder with him to show you what the seemingly modern buildings used to look like --as in the photo above. This historic train depot was built in the 1800's. Now beautifully restored, it is the home of a gift boutique called Catching Fireflies. It is packed full of delightful things and one can pass a lot of time here. Kudos to the Rochester-Avon Historical Society for all you do.
