This is a typical chapel made out of bark that was established by the Jesuit missionaries. The first ones were built in the 1600's by the "black robes" as the Indians called the Jesuits. Father Charles Dablon was the builder of the first birchbark chapel of which we see the recreation above, sitting below the fort on Mackinac Island.
