Youmacon Convention in Detroit

November's first weekend means Youmacon, the Anime Convention in Detroit with 20,000 wildly dressed participants using the GM Renaissance Center and Cobo Hall.  The weather today was beautiful for going back and forth between the two and these guys--lovers of anime, manga and gaming-- adore being photographed.

Joe Louis 75th anniversary

Exactly 75 years ago today, our "Brown Bomber",  Joe Louis, won the boxing heavyweight championship of the world at age 23.  He kept that title for 12 years. In Macomb County, there are remnants of the 250 acre farm that he bought called Spring Hill on Ryan Road and Hamlin in Shelby Township.  He had kept horses there, developed a racetrack and bleachers, and converted a house into a popular nightclub.  He sold it all to the state of Michigan when he ran into financial problems. The house burned down in 1973, but you can still see where the foundation used to be. The statue standing inside Detroit's Cobo Hall was created 25 years ago by Ed Hamilton to mark the 50 year anniversary of that championship fight..

60th National Square Dancing Competition

The exciting 60th National Square Dance Convention takes place next month at Cobo Hall in downtown Detroit from June 22-25 which features round, square, contra, clogging and country line dancing. There's a section for youth under 18 to compete as well. You would be surprised to find out how many square dancing clubs there are in Michigan! They offer a great work out and they are certainly fun to watch! The photo above was taken last year at the Michigan Square Dance Competition at the Troy Marriott.

Detroit Kennel Club Dog Show

Thousands of dog lovers from every corner of Michigan gathered this past weekend at Cobo Arena for the 90th Annual Detroit Kennel Club Dog Show. Visitors of all ages enjoyed a myriad of activities with over 150 purebred dogs registered with the American Kennel Club. In this video, crowds gathered to watch the adorable fox terriers chase the fake fowl to the finish line. This is a great event for a family looking for a day of fun or if you are a dog lover of any age. You can search for reputable a breeder or simply research what kind off dog is best for you. The terriers racing were having as much fun as the people watching!

2010 Detroit Boat Show

For thousands of Michiganders their thoughts transition from Winter activities to thoughts of Spring while attending the 2010 Detroit Boat Show at Cobo Hall in downtown Detroit. This year the boat show ran Feb 13-21 and covered over 500,000 square feet and displayed over 1000 boats that ranged in length from 10 feet to 50 feet. Michigan ranks 3rd in the USA for the number of registered boats. It's no wonder! You are never any further than six miles from a natural water source in Michigan and always less than 90 miles from a Great Lake shoreline! Michigan is a boater's paradise!

North American International Auto Show

There's been a car show in Detroit, the Motor City, since 1907 when it was held in a Beer Garden. Having grown to international status it is now entering its 21st year in 2010 as the North American International Auto Show at our downtown Cobo Hall (celebrating its 50th year at Cobo). Among the most prestigious car shows in the world, it runs through Jan 24th. Auto manufacturers from around the globe display their latest products and the newest technologies.
