Java and Jazz at Detroit Public Library

Once a month there is a Java and Jazz series at the almost century old Detroit Public Library sponsored by Comerica Bank. In the midst of their 13th season, this month you can hear Saxappeal on Tuesday evening, May 21 at 6pm and they are free. This is a super cultural experience for all ages.

Hotel St Regis in Detroit

When the Hotel St Regis opened on W Grand Boulevard in Detroit 47 years ago, it was the most expensive and luxurious hotel in the US. With a French Regency architectural design, they wanted to combine the elegance of the past with the comforts of the present. They showed off the lobby area with a sea of crystal chandeliers, marble flooring, fleur-de-lys and 23k gold trimmed walnut paneling. This boutique hotel has undergone extensive renovation, has 125 elegant rooms and the full service restaurant, La Musique, and banquet facilities. Pedestrian overhead tunnels connect the hotel with the Fisher Theatre, Cadillac Place and New Center One. The musical Catch Me If You Can is showing at the Fisher this month. We can conveniently valet park at the St Regis, dine at the hotel and walk to the theatre and spend the night in a luxurious hotel.

Maccabees in Detroit

There's a new unique eatery in Detroit on Woodward across from the DIA. Maccabees is located in an art deco building of the same name with a huge arching window overlooking the avenue. It's a great bar location where you can watch the world pass by in midtown and use their free wifi. We chatted with the owner who informed us that all the beautiful ornate lighting is one-of-a-kind and done by a local artist. The food is good-- very bistro like-- and they are open for lunch and dinner. Sunday's $12 brunch offering includes a mimosa or a bloody mary. Live jazz spices up Thursdays nights. Their $5 valet parking was very much appreciated.

Detroit Jazz Festival

Have you experienced the world's largest free jazz festival right here in our state?  Downtown Detroit is all abuzz with these outstanding musicians this fine Labor Day Weekend. This tradition is it its 33rd year. Wynton Marsalis above was surrounded by thousands of listeners tonight.  We have never seen so many people jammed into Campus Martius and Cadillac Square. The vibes were awesome. The concerts continue tomorrow and Monday as our Tigers try to sweep the Chicago White Sox and tie for first place on Sunday.

Detroit Jazz Festival

Today is the last day of the 2011 Detroit Jazz Festival which takes up 2 millions square feet of downtown space starting at Hart Plaza's riverfront and running up to Campus Martius. "We Bring You the World" has 5 different stages with continuous beautiful music emanating from each all Labor Day Weekend long. For 32 years, world class jazz has been brought to this festival in Detroit and all the entertainment is still free.
