Wayne State Art Walk in Detroit

It is a pleasant stroll through the Art Walk of Wayne State's campus. Easily walkable from the Lodge Freeway to Woodward on the east, then from Hancock on the south to Palmer on the north there are 27 sculptures scattered throughout the compact campus. The art walk represents a wide range of interesting artists and their works. The Dancing Maidens on top are by Oskar Stonorov who immigrated from Germany in 1929. Morris Brose immigrated from Poland in 1931 and created Sentinel II, bottom left. The limestone relief is Student by G Alden Smith who taught at Wayne from 1940-1983.

Bath City Art Walk in Mt. Clemens

Mt Clemens has made a tremendous effort in recent years to put art in public places.  Walkers can enjoy the Bath City Art Walk which not only highlights this unique sculptures but offers a great tour of the downtown area as well. Downloadable map and photos available here.

Sheep roam Rochester

Chicago had its painted cows back in 1999 and it started a worldwide phenomenon. Since then,  Midland had its trolls, Detroit had the little cars, South Haven had its benches and Rochester, this summer, has its sheep.  This is actually their second Ewe Revue, the first one having taken place in 2001.  People ask why sheep?  These wooly animals used to be the main stay of Rochester's economy with the Rochester Knitting Mill right behind the downtown block.  Of course, today we know it as the Rochester Mills Beer Company. All the sheep were decorated on a Hollywood theme.  The one above is A River Runs Through It, and stands at the Rochester Public Library adjacent to the river. Whimsically created by local artists, in September, many of these little critters will be auctioned off for charity.
