Port Hope Chimney

The Port Hope Chimney was built by John Gletz in 1858 and is the only remains of the lumber mill established that year by William R. Staffard.  The mill was destroyed by fire.   Farming eventually replaced lumber as the major industry when the trees were gone.  The town of Port Hope grew up around the mill and has some beautiful Victorian style homes.  There is a fantastic camp ground next to the chimney  on Lake Huron, with a baseball field, beach, playground, boat launch, and building.  Along the  old fashioned main street there are with a few antique shops and  a Realtor's office that looks more like a museum  than a real estate office.   A walking tour brochure,with some of the 11 historic sites listed on the National register of Historic Places, is available for visitors.

Andrew's on the Corner in Detroit

If you are looking for a shuttle to the Tiger game against the Yankees this afternoon, there is always Andrew's on the Corner in the Warehouse District. A fixture in Detroit run by the Andrews family since the early 1900's, they have a secure parking lot (no charge) and the sports bar food is very good with a selection of burgers and salads, perch and strip steak, as well as homemade soups. There's an upper open deck on top in the back that overlooks Chene Park and the river.

Dow Diamond in Midland

The Great Lakes Loons play baseball in Midland's Dow Diamond. This beautiful new stadium, opened six years ago this month and they will be throwing out their opening pitch this Thursday against Fort Wayne. For a minor league baseball team they have unique features like suites, firepits, fireplaces, free wifi and a 35 foot LED video board! Lisa Nails in Sterling Heights

Everybody's on the Tigers' bandwagon with their dramatic sweep of the Yankees and capturing the trophy for the American League. Now we are headed for the World Series.  Lisa Nails on Van Dyke in Sterling Heights does nail art for Detroit baseball fans who support their team's effort to make it all the way.

Ernie Harwell Statue at Comerica Park

Ernie Harwell was a legend in Detroit.  The announcer for the Detroit Tigers passed away 2 years ago. For 42 years he spoke to us via radio or television with his singular southern style. He would start the spring training broadcast with a reading from the Song of Solomon 2:11-12  "For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land." Today the Tigers begin their 112th season at home and Ernie's spirit permeates the ballpark. Go Tigers!

Today is Black Friday and many stores have been open since 9pm last night.  An alternative to fighting the crowds is to do your shopping on the computer.  Tigers.com is offering 20% off today only.  Congratulations to our just incredible player, Justin Verlander, who won not only the AL Cy Young but the MVP as well.  We could not be prouder. Chelio's Rooftop bar in Detroit

This is a salute to our Detroit Tigers, who gave us so much optimism and boosted the image of our city all year long. It was a great year and a great run. We look forward to opening day, April 5th at Comerica Park. Prior to the game, we enjoy the bird's eye view of the park from Chelio's on Grand Circus Park. They even have bleachers set up on the rooftop to accommodate large groups.

Comerica Park: Where the Tigers are Champs!

The playoff games leading up to the World Series begin tomorrow in NYC and not at our own Comerica Park in Detroit. We will just have to whip the Yankees butts in the Bronx and then return to the Motor City to complete the task. Following the game, fireworks will be set off in the stadium for a visually stimulating and colorful display against the green and waterfall fountain backdrop in the outfield. Look for the tiger sculptures and a huge bat when entering the stadium. Bless you, boys!

Comerica Park Fireworks

A crowd of 35,000 in Detroit enjoyed the fireworks at Comerica Park last night despite the Tigers losing to Seattle. The display was pretty dramatic, as they hauled out the wagons right in the middle of centerfield to set those pyrotechnics off. The sounds echoed off the downtown buildings magnifying the effects! We loved it and thought the back drop of these famous Tigers of old added to the ambience. All summer long fans are treated to these post-game shows on the weekend night games.

The Tiger Club at Comerica Park in Detroit

If you ever get the opportunity, grab the chance to experience the Tiger Club with a humdinger of a view over the ballpark. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is baseball all the way. It's reserved for members (like season ticket holders) and their guests. It is also rented out for private parties at non-game times, which is how we got in and what a memorable trip through Tiger Town we had! Detroit opens in New York this Thursday. Root for our beloved cats!

Comerica Park's singing hotdog vendor: Charly

Baseball's finale, the world series is wrapping up, and we thought it appropriate to say farewell for the season by showing one of our favorite things at Comerica Park: Charlie Marcuse the singing hot dog vendor!  Located on the third base side, you cannot miss his operatic tones. This Detroit icon has been belting out hot dog lines for over 10 years.

Oldsmobile Park

Not only did we lose the Oldsmobile brand of cars in 2004, the baseball park in Lansing is changing names from Oldsmobile Park to Cooley Law School Stadium this year. Last month, we still found the Olds name on the stadium. Oldsmobile was founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897. They built 35.2 million cars including 14 million in the Lansing factory. The Stadium is home to the minor league team --the Lansing Lugnuts whose opener is tonight at 7:05 against MSU.
