Andrew's on the Corner in Detroit

If you are looking for a shuttle to the Tiger game against the Yankees this afternoon, there is always Andrew's on the Corner in the Warehouse District. A fixture in Detroit run by the Andrews family since the early 1900's, they have a secure parking lot (no charge) and the sports bar food is very good with a selection of burgers and salads, perch and strip steak, as well as homemade soups. There's an upper open deck on top in the back that overlooks Chene Park and the river.

Happy Birthday, Gordie Howe

Gordie Howe turns 84 today. Number 9 was signed by Red Wings at age 16 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1957. Artist, Doug West, has created a beautiful giclée print of Mr. Hockey with Gordie's signature on it. These are very limited and available through the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.

The Detroit Red Wings

Detroit has some rabid fans when it comes to hockey.  With their lop-sided 8-2 victory over the LA Kings Saturday and squeaking out a victory over the Oilers on Monday, they are set to take on the Canucks tonight as they scrapple with the Blues and the Blackhawks for first place. If you're a Detroit hockey fan than you know all about Datsyuk, octopi, Franzen, the Joe, Howard and hat tricks. Amen. We featured this team and their arena a couple of years ago here.

Michigan Sled Dogs in Fraser

The Great Lakes Sports City Arena with its five ice rinks in Fraser is home to our Michigan Sled Dogs where they played in the  Tournament January 8-9. The teams consists of male and female athletes with various disabilities such as spinal cord, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, amputees, etc. Players' ages range from 8 to their mid-forties. Competing against the Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins here, they are exciting to watch! Of the 4 games they played, the Sled Dogs won 3 and tied 1.

The Joe

The Joe Louis Arena (a.k.a. The Joe) has been the home for our Detroit Red Wings for 30 years. It is named after the Detroit boxer, Joe Louis, heavyweight champion (we featured his fist here). Holding 20,000 spectators, it is also used for concerts, ice shows and even circuses. The San Jose Sharks come into town this Thursday night followed by the Senators on Saturday. A weird Detroit tradition is to throw an octopus on the ice if our home team scores a goal. No, it is not allowed, but crazy fans sneak them in under their coats or pants!
